Wallsburg hears Main Canyon Road CDBG update; environmental clearance underway, construction contingent on state contract

Wallsburg — At its Jan. 8 meeting, the Wallsburg Town Council received an update on the Main Canyon Road project and the town’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application.

A staff member reading project updates dated Jan. 7 said the stop signs at Main and Center streets are malfunctioning and that parts to fix the signs are expected next week. The planned 2026 construction work includes profile grinding to smooth the roadway (particularly at joints and the church approach), a chip seal of the full roadway and final pavement markings; the presentation listed a tentative completion date of June 30, 2026.

The presenter said the environmental document for the stormwater study has been approved and that environmental clearance for the construction segment has been submitted and is awaiting state approval. "As soon as we receive the contract from the state, this project will begin," the presenter said.

Council members were also told that the town has submitted a funding application to the Joint Highway Committee, which will hear grant presentations in mid-February to mid-March; Chris Potter was named as the person who will notify the mayor and clerk about scheduling for those presentations.

Council members discussed attending those Joint Highway Committee hearings to learn how other communities present and scope similar projects, and noted the value of observing peer ideas for project design and grant-seeking strategy.
