Council hears plans for Aug. 9 block party and community night out; city support requested

City staff and event organizers outlined a downtown block party scheduled for Saturday, August 9, beginning at about 9:00 a.m. Program highlights include bike- and scooter-safety sessions, a family poker-run with seven sponsored stations and $100 top/worst-hand prizes, a chalk-art contest, bingo in the chill zone, a free movie at 2 p.m., taiko and jazz performances, workshops and evening dancing.
Colleen Austin, representing the Gunston Valley Cares Coalition, described a Community Night Out starting at 5 p.m. with booths from health-care providers, EMS ambulance tours, AED/CPR training, hearing and vision screenings, teen center activities, library and counseling resources, and grant-funded supplies. Austin asked the city to waive pavilion power fees for the event and to provide additional trash receptacles.
Councilors encouraged business involvement and agreed staff should coordinate logistical support (trash, stage access via the alley, and power), with follow-up to confirm specific requests.
Organizers noted the event supports local businesses and community bonding; the council asked staff to work with organizers on permits and resource needs.
