Green River Council approves $5,000 for medical center’s back-to-school event

The Green River City Council voted July 8 to provide up to $5,000 to support a community back-to-school event organized by the Green River Medical Center.
Tyler Hunt, the medical center’s financial officer, told the council the Aug. 9 event aims to offer free children’s immunizations and sports physicals, along with food, wellness activities and education. "Our current estimated budget for the event, including the cost of labor for our staff to be on-site, is $11,500," Hunt said, adding that staff labor accounts for roughly $4,500 of that total and that immunizations could increase costs if they are not provided free.
Hunt said the center hopes to partner with the county health department, USARA (Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness), local prevention coalitions and other community groups to keep services low- or no-cost. Council members asked about staffing costs and prior attendance; organizers said they hoped for about 200 attendees and that a similar event had been held in 2023.
Councilmember S3 moved to approve funding of up to $5,000; the motion was seconded and passed by roll call with those present voting in favor. The council discussion noted the event aligns with city goals to support community health and that the city’s tables, chairs and canopies would be used in exchange for sponsorship recognition.
The council did not specify conditions tied to the payment schedule or reporting requirements; Hunt said logistics such as immunization partnerships were still being finalized. The city will provide the approved sponsorship out of its general fund.
