Kane County adopts $55.16 million budget for 2026

Clerk/auditor Shamil Lam, who led the budget presentation, said the figure reflects several late adjustments and corrections, including changes to the public safety facility line and an accounting correction to the TRCC fund. "So overall, our our total amount, is gonna be $55,161,009," Lam said during the hearing.
Why it matters: Commissioners described the budget as a moderate, sustainable plan that balances reserves and targeted investments rather than broad cuts. The commission increased funding to preserve fragile records in the recorders office, consolidated a new KCYC coordinator position from other funds, and set aside funds to support the municipal building authority. Lam also noted increased costs tied to public safety equipment and wildland fire response: the sheriffs anticipated body-camera program added about $65,000 to the general fund, and new wildland fire projections added roughly $80,000 in expense estimates.
During the discussion, commissioners pressed staff on several account balances and requested a reduction in discretionary reserves. Lam described reallocated and zeroed-out line items (for example, a prior fund 01/14 that will be eliminated) and said staff trimmed placeholder legal and miscellaneous lines to help cover new obligations. Commissioners emphasized the ability to open the budget for mid-year adjustments if necessary.
The chair, Commissioner Celeste Myers, thanked staff and department heads for working with the finance committee on the package and described the plan as "in a pretty good middle of the road sustainable place" that avoids drastic cuts while making targeted investments.
What happens next: The commissions vote enacted Resolution 2025-42, making the budget effective for the 2026 fiscal year. Staff said they will monitor expenditures and return to the commission if a formal budget opening is required later in the year.
