Emery County Travel Bureau approves OHV grant applications for trails crew wages and equipment

Emery County’s travel board on Feb. 11 approved two applications to the state’s OHVR grant program to support local trail maintenance and equipment needs.
Staff told the board they planned to request $10,000 to cover trails-crew operator wages for 2025–26 and a separate $25,000 application to buy equipment and supplies, including a generator, jackhammer, replacement tracks and a supply of culverts. "We match this with volunteer hours," a staff member said, noting the bureau counts partner agency labor and the bureau’s own prep time as match.
Board members discussed prior grant amounts and workload; staff said past personnel requests were about $7,500 and recommended increasing that to $10,000 to reflect higher equipment use and hours. The equipment request was described as covering up-front purchases that would otherwise come from the bureau’s operating budget.
Motions to file both grant applications were made, seconded and approved by roll call. Staff said truck-lease costs and maintenance budgets will be used to strengthen the grant match if needed.
Why it matters: remote trails managed by the BLM and Forest Service rely on local crews and volunteers for maintenance; the bureau’s grant applications finance people and gear to keep those routes passable in spring and summer. Approval means the bureau will proceed with the applications and follow the state OHVR application timeline.
