Daggett County approves Union Wireless internet service for sheriff’s office

The Daggett County Commission voted to accept a Union Wireless quote to provide fiber-based internet to the Daggett County Sheriff’s Office, citing persistent slow service at the sheriff’s location.

Commission discussion focused on capacity, redundancy and costs. Speaker 4 described the current radio/microwave setup and said the quoted option would offer about 200 Mbps up and 200 Mbps down, compared with the office’s typical 1–5 Mbps today. Speaker 4 said the plan would include a secondary firewall license and a site-to-site link between buildings so one outage would not interrupt critical services. “200 is quite a bit better than 100,” Speaker 4 said. Speaker 2 described the existing service as “sucked” and said any substantial increase would be an improvement.

Commissioners reviewed budget implications. The recurring service cost discussed in the meeting was $410 per month; commissioners also noted likely one-time installation costs (a rough estimate near $2,000) and an additional firewall license cost referenced at about $800 per year. Speakers suggested splitting ongoing costs between emergency services and IT and pursuing available grant funding such as EOMPG to offset expenses.

Speaker 5 moved to approve the internet service for the Daggett County Sheriff’s Office per the Union Wireless quote; the motion was seconded and the board voiced assent. The chair summarized the motion as accepting Union Wireless to provide fiber and said the approval would move the procurement forward.

Next steps: staff will coordinate procurement and confirm exact installation and licensing costs, determine any additional building-access charges discovered in a site survey, and pursue available grant or IT cost-sharing options.
