Green River adopts ordinance creating fire‑inspector role and duties

The Green River City Council voted unanimously Aug. 12 to add a section to city code creating a fire‑inspector position with specified eligibility, duties and authority.
Presiding Official (S1) said the proposed code addition provides two pathways to appointment: individuals certified through state processes (UFRA/Utah Fire Rescue) or independent contractors who obtain appropriate occupational licensing. The ordinance assigns supervision to the director of planning and code enforcement and lists duties including annual inspections, documentation of findings, issuing notices of violation consistent with state statute, pre‑occupancy inspections for new construction and coordination with the state fire marshal when state jurisdiction applies.
Councilmember (S3) raised the possibility that some duties currently in the fire chief’s job description could conflict with the new fire‑inspector duties; council asked staff to review section 4‑1‑4 and the fee schedule for consistency. Councilmember (S2) moved to approve the ordinance; Councilmember (S8) seconded; a roll call vote carried unanimously.
The ordinance requires inspectors to keep records for at least five years and to comply with continuing education requirements tied to certification. Staff said the council will review the fee schedule and related code language before finalizing any linked changes.
