The assessor said appraiser trainees must complete education hours (for some designations, more than 81 hours) and accrue work experience (the mass-appraisal path requires roughly 1,000 hours of work before sitting for licensing exams), and estimated a maximum cost of roughly $58,000 for the remainder of 2025 if all expenses were needed.
Commissioners discussed funding sources and agreed the transfer could be drawn from existing miscellaneous and employee-expense line items without a separate budget opening, provided the transfer is processed transparently. The motion includes a two-year limit on the temporary hire (through 2026) and was amended on the record to specify up to $50,000 from fund 01/10.
What’s next: The assessor will work with the clerk-auditor to process the transfer and begin onboarding a trainee; the commission will review future budget implications in next year’s cycle.
