Mayfield adopts state-required Wildland Urban Interface building standards

Mayfield Town Council voted on Dec. 10 to adopt Ordinance 2025-7, which incorporates Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) building standards into the town code in order to comply with state law passed during the 2025 legislative session.
The ordinance references state authority (House Bill 48 and Utah Code 65A-8-401 as cited in the reading) and creates a new Article 8.3 in Mayfield Town Code titled "Wildland Urban Interface Standards." It makes the local fire chief or designee the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for plan review, mitigation compliance, inspections and recommending updates to classifications and hazard mitigation practices. The ordinance also directs code amendments to related titles and includes severability and clerical-correction provisions.
Gunnison Valley Fire Department representatives explained the purpose of the standards: assessments focus on exterior defensible space and building features to reduce wildfire risk in interface areas and to enable a coordinated state–local response. Council members and residents discussed the town’s lack of an in-town fire station, longer response times from regional stations, insurance availability concerns, and the county’s role for areas outside town limits.
Council members moved and adopted the ordinance on the record. Staff noted that further codification steps (amending Titles 5 and 15 and cross-references) will follow to place the WUI standards in the town code.
What’s next: The town will complete code amendments to integrate Article 8.3 into the municipal code, designate enforcement procedures with the AHJ, and coordinate inspection and mitigation roles with Gunnison Valley Fire and county officials.
