Members of the Cache County Open Space Advisory Committee spent part of their Aug. 4 meeting discussing strategies for funding small parcels and the special challenges they present.
The committee acknowledged it has not adopted a formal size threshold for ‘‘small parcels’’ but that members have informally used about 20 acres as a working reference. Members said smaller parcels often have higher per-acre costs and require more administrative effort, which can make matching outside funding more difficult.
Committee members emphasized that existing scoring procedures would still apply and that County Council would retain authority over any criteria or matching arrangements. As one member put it, smaller parcels ‘‘under the right scenario’’ might still be appealing to COSAC despite the added complexity.
Members suggested gathering data on dollars per acre and parcel values to make better-informed recommendations. The committee agreed to postpone a detailed decision until the next meeting when their member who has led prior small-parcel work (Eric, referenced) can be present.
