Student speakers said the total cost is about $1,300 per student and that Carbon County school district has granted $400 per Carbon student; Carbon is sending a larger contingent (reported as 43 Carbon students).
"$1,300 per student," one student clarified while reading the trip costs and itinerary. Students described fundraising efforts including individual solicitation and yard sales; one student said a peer had raised $416 in three days through direct appeals.
Commissioners discussed the request and a motion was made to provide $250 per Emery County student. The motion was seconded and passed with votes recorded as Warwood: Aye; Leonard: Aye; Jensen: Aye.
Commissioners asked whether the band could perform for the commission at a future meeting; students said they would arrange a short performance.
The donation covers part of each Emery County student's stated cost; students and staff said additional fundraising and district contributions would cover the remainder.
