Daggett County explores reviving Burbot Bash, seeks business data and regional cooperation

Daggett County staff and commissioners used much of the Sept. 23 meeting to discuss plans to revive the Burbot Bash fishing event and to gauge local business support.
Jordan Hewitt, economic development and tourism staff, said her office has been wrapping up seasonal work but is collecting data from local businesses on sales and room-night impacts and has asked for volunteer commitments to support in-person registration and closing ceremonies. "I reached out yesterday to all of the businesses to try to get their input," Hewitt said.
Speakers described mixed business responses: some lodging reported being full during past events, while others saw reduced room nights. Panelists also said the regional chamber and some past sponsors have stepped away from organizing the event, making it harder to find a long-term sponsor or private partner. Hewitt said she had tried Sweetwater County Tourism for help and was told they "don't have the bandwidth" to assist.
Commissioners and staff discussed the need to measure impacts using sales and lodging data, and recommended cooperative planning with Sweetwater County, Game and Fish and other partners who have historically supported the event. A tentative follow-up meeting on Oct. 9 was proposed to determine whether there is enough local interest and sponsorship to proceed.
No final decision was made on whether to hold a full-scale Burbot Bash; staff were directed to continue outreach for sponsors, volunteers and impact data to inform the next meeting.
