Residents press Daggett County on Dutch John hangars as commission discusses airport layout and RDA funding

Don and Jackie Weaver of Dutch John told the Daggett County Commission on Sept. 23 that private aircraft owners have discussed hangars at the county's Dutch John Airport for years and asked for an update on progress toward construction.
The Weavers said they have spent part of each year in the area for more than six months and have aviation industry experience; they asked whether the county had any near-term plans to accommodate private hangars and offered to help. "We just thought we'd ask for an update," Don Weaver said during public comment.
Commissioners responded that an updated airport layout plan has been on file for several years and that the county has recently resumed conversations with an airport engineer, the Dutch John mayor and the Vernal airport manager. Speaker 1 said the county could provide a copy of the airport layout plan and noted renewed interest among local officials.
Commissioners discussed options to accelerate hanger-ready infrastructure. Speaker 1 suggested the county's Redevelopment Agency (RDA) has available funds and could consider using RDA money to bring utilities or other infrastructure to a leased parcel if private parties were willing to build hangars. The commission did not commit to a specific dollar amount or timetable.
The Weavers also offered a pragmatic interim solution: erecting a movable or temporary shelter that could provide protection while longer-term plans are worked out. "We would be willing to put something up that could actually be moved if it ended up it didn't fit your long term plans," one Weaver said.
No formal vote or funding decision was made; commissioners agreed to send the airport layout plan to interested residents and to continue coordination with the airport engineer and regional partners. The commission recessed at 09:36 a.m. to hold a Municipal Building Authority meeting.
