King County opens small-business grant applications; pre-applications due June 1

Speaker 2 (unidentified board member) said the county added a grants-and-funding page to its website and that the small-business grant is the first opportunity listed there. "If you can see on my screen, this is the King County web page and they added a page specifically for grants and funding opportunities," Speaker 2 said, noting publicity so far has included a newspaper article and chamber emails.
Board members said no official applications had been submitted as of the most recent Friday. Speaker 3 said the chamber sent a breaking-news email to its members and that the chamber would mention the grant at its luncheon. Members agreed they need broader outreach in the next four weeks to attract applicants.
Speakers described program design: the grant includes a 1:1 match and a per-project cap discussed in the meeting as $20,000. Speaker 2 said the program is intended to support existing businesses that will expand operations, purchase equipment, or add employees. "That's exactly what it's designed for," Speaker 2 said when a member asked whether funds could cover new machinery and jobs created by an expansion.
Speaker 3 described an evaluation process adapted from Iron County: the board will use a scoring rubric to screen pre-applications and reserve detailed scoring for full applications and final pitches. Board members planned to use a simplified rubric to screen pre-applications on June 2 and apply the full scoring rubric later in the review process.
Next steps: the board will publicize the June 1 pre-application deadline, hold a June 2 meeting at 3:00 p.m. to review pre-applications, and invite applicants to submit full proposals subject to the rubric described by Speaker 3. The board encouraged businesses that meet the program’s criteria to apply.
