Council ratifies GHIL change order, hears rec board updates and readies wrap-tax steps

Council ratified a change order for GHIL site improvements Sept. 16, authorizing approximately 1,250 additional tons of material and raising the project estimate from about $120,000 to $127,000 after staff reported an additional $40,000 state grant reduced the city’s share.
Staff said Rasmus Excavation completed the work requested and the change order was time-sensitive; the council moved, seconded and approved ratification and the additional expense. Council discussion emphasized doing the work right the first time and noted that the county assisted with road work into the area.
In recreation matters, a board representative said Recreation Director Tyson submitted a resignation letter effective at the end of the year; the board plans to advertise for a part-time, nonbenefit director and seek an overlap month for training in January. The board also noted a state award for the city’s outdoor recreation and asked councilors to encourage voters to support the RAP (wrap) tax renewal on the November ballot (referred to in materials as Proposition 10). Staff reviewed next steps for required public hearings and voter information mailings; councilors stressed turnout and urged proponents to educate residents on the tax’s importance (Gunnison contributes about 37% of the recreation district’s revenue).
The council also discussed other park maintenance items, accessibility for new playground equipment and ongoing infrastructure repairs reported by public works.
