Gunnison council approves $15,000 purchase of battery extrication tools for fire department

Gunnison City Council on Sept. 16 voted to approve a $15,000 purchase of battery-operated extrication tools for the city fire department.
An unidentified fire-department representative told the council the equipment was being liquidated by the manufacturer and would normally cost about $30,000. The representative said the new battery-operated tools are lighter, easier to handle and remove the need for hydraulic hoses and pumps the department now uses.
Councilmembers confirmed the purchase could be funded from the city’s PTIF account, which had been saving money for a brush truck that is now being provided by the district. Councilman Robert Anderson moved to approve the purchase; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call yes vote by Don Childs, Mike Warner, Lehi Hill and Anderson.
The fire department also reported it had signed paperwork for a brush truck purchased from Freedom Ford; the truck will have a bed fabricated in Logan and is expected to be operational next year.
The council’s action authorizes staff to complete the equipment purchase; no further conditions were recorded at the meeting.
