A Gunnison Valley Fire Department representative (Speaker 6) told the council the state House Bill 48 requires municipalities with properties in the urban interface to adopt standards that reduce catastrophic-wildfire risk. “If you ever annex into the wildland urban interface… you’re already in it,” Speaker 6 said, explaining that adopting the standards now prepares the town for future growth and makes properties eligible for state programs and inspections.
The ordinance text read into the record refers to Utah legislative authority for the code and directs the town to amend code sections so the WUI requirements are codified in Mayfield’s municipal code; it also assigns plan review, inspections and mitigation enforcement duties to an authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) from the local fire organization.
Speaker 7 moved to approve Ordinance 2025-7, the motion was seconded and the council approved the ordinance by voice vote. Council members and the fire representative discussed how inspections focus on exterior defensible space and how the county fuels mitigation teams can assist when heavier mitigation is needed. Council directed staff to amend the town code to reflect the new WUI article and to coordinate with the designated fire authority to implement inspection and enforcement procedures.
