Council declines to approve quitclaim deed for East Birmingham parcel

An ordinance authorizing the mayor to execute a quitclaim deed upon receipt of $13,785.70 for a narrow strip of property in East Birmingham (legal description read into the record and address given as 926 37th Place North) was considered at the Jan. 27 meeting. Councilor Gunn asked about intended use for the property; Mayor Randall L. Woodfin said staff did not have information on future plans and that further departmental due diligence was required.

Councilor Hunter Williams objected to conveying the property, citing prior municipal demolitions and neighborhood impacts and questioning how the city would monitor subsequent redevelopment. After discussion and a recorded voting process, the council president announced that the item did not pass. No implementation or conveyance occurred as a result of the failed ordinance.
