Klamath County approves tourism and economic development grant recommendations

Klamath County commissioners voted unanimously on Oct. 22 to adopt recommendations from the tourism and economic development grant review panels.
Tourism grants: The tourism review panel reviewed 26 applications and recommended funding six projects after vetting; the chair noted the panel recommended full funding for Discover Klamath, Klamath Music and Lynn Community Service Club and partial awards for Garage Taphouse, Klamath Trails Alliance and the Town of Bonanza. The panel also recommended that Discover Klamath, if funded for a data purchase, share that data at no cost with other grantees and the county. The chair said the total requests this round totaled about $607,000.
The chair moved to adopt the tourism panel’s recommendations as presented; the motion was seconded and the board voted to approve the recommendations unanimously.
Economic development grants: The board then considered economic development recommendations. The chair moved to adopt the economic development committee’s recommendations to fully fund Discover Klamath, Plymouth Falls City School District, FEM Music, Oregon Tech Foundation and Klamath Casket and to partially fund Theater Todd’s Pediatric Therapy. A commissioner asked to review a full application for a housing study that was not recommended for funding; the committee said members felt a housing shortage was already well known and raised concerns that the proposed contractor was not local to the area. The board voted to adopt the economic development recommendations; the chair voted aye and the motion carried.
