Mosquito abatement district notifies Copperton of proposed tax increase, public hearing set Dec. 8

Copperton — Dan McBride, district manager for the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District, told the Copperton Town Council on Oct. 15 that the district intends to seek a tax-rate increase and has scheduled a public hearing for Dec. 8.

McBride said the proposed increase would raise roughly $320,000 for the district and that total property-tax revenue for the district is projected at about $1,420,000. He said the increase would be distributed across roughly 500,000 households in the district and that the effect on an average Copperton homeowner is small — McBride described the homeowner impact as about 77 cents per year.

McBride asked Copperton to consider appointing a representative to the mosquito-abatement board; he said the district has previously sent certified notices and that having a local board representative helps with coordination. He also said the district is pursuing technologies and agreements to improve access to restricted properties and to bolster monitoring and control work.

Council members asked for the district’s contact information and asked staff to place the item on a future agenda so the town can decide whether to appoint a representative and to solicit public input before any local decisions related to the district’s funding.
