Scofield Town Council on Jan. 12 approved terms for a proposed purchase of 2.72 acres located inside the fenced area of the Scofield Town Cemetery after a title search revealed the town does not have clear title to those parcels.
Town staff said historical records were lost when the Emery County courthouse burned in 1895 and that a title search found the parcels are owned by the Talonis (transcribed variously) family. The town proposed offering $20,000 for the parcels and to reimburse reasonable legal, travel and conveyance expenses, and to cover rollback taxes, if assessed, to resolve title and incorporate the land under clear town ownership.
Council voted to approve the terms so the town attorney can transmit the proposal to the family's counsel (Nick Sampino was named as the family's attorney in the motion description). Staff will proceed with formal offer and any subsequent conveyance steps if the family accepts.
