Kanosh council appoints interim mayor, approves election canvas and routine business

Kanosh — At its regular meeting the Kanosh Town Council appointed Neil Shumway to finish the current mayoral term, approved the official canvas of the municipal election and completed routine business including warrants, department reports and a small veterans donation.
The council entertained a motion to appoint Neil Shumway as mayor for the remainder of Scott’s term; the motion was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote. Shumway told the council he had already taken the oath of office.
Council reviewed the official election canvas. Turnout was 188 of 363 registered voters (51.79%). The mayoral race tallies recorded Wendell Crabb with 95 votes and Neil Shumway with 86 votes; council member results included Brian Robert Batt with 163 votes and Timothy Bennett White with 127 votes. The council reported that the election audit found no discrepancies and voted to approve the canvas.
The council also reviewed and approved warrants and invoices from vendors including Roper Lumber, NACA Auto Parts, Peterson Plumbing, Carquest and Davis Automotive; a credit from a utility vendor reduced one monthly billing. A motion to pay the warrants was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote.
A donation of $100 to American Legion Post 61 for a Veterans Day dinner was proposed by Bart Watcott, moved and seconded and approved by voice vote.
In other business, department reports covered planning and zoning permits (one building permit approved, several pending perk tests), park website calendar improvements, streetlight repairs, and routine water account delinquencies. The council closed by moving into a closed session to discuss the character of a town citizen; a roll call recorded at least two members’ votes as 'aye' before doors were closed.
Next steps: signed election canvas will be filed with municipal records and posted on the county website; routine vendor payments will be processed by town staff.
