Council OKs $500 for new fire-department communications app

Sigurdtown — The council voted Feb. 5 to approve a $500 expenditure to subscribe to an app-based communications system for the fire department for one year.
The fire department requested the change to address problems with obsolescent pager equipment and to improve roster management and dispatch reliability. A council member said the app-based approach allows for easier user management (add/delete phone numbers) and eliminates reliance on chargers that staff had reported being forgotten.
A motion to approve the $500 purchase for the year was moved, seconded and passed by recorded Aye votes. Council asked staff to notify Fire Chief Mike of the approval so the department can proceed with setup.
The purchase is intended to improve emergency communications and will be paid from the fire-department operating budget.
