The chair framed the change as an effort to reduce the cost advantage of cremation relative to traditional burials: "One of the reasons people get cremated is lower costs," the chair said, noting the fee adjustment aims to better align cremation fees with standard funeral costs.
Commissioners clarified that the county road crew performs grave openings in Lawrence and asked whether the county covers indigent burials; staff confirmed the county handles those openings and that the fee structure affects how those services are charged. An unidentified commissioner moved to approve the resolution amendment; the motion was seconded and approved by the commissioners present.
