Council to return Mayfield Automotive renewal payment amid conditional-use concerns

Mayfield councilors told staff to return a mailed business-license renewal payment from Mayfield Automotive while the town investigates alleged violations of the property's conditional-use permit.

S1 introduced the renewal form and asked whether the council wanted to renew. Multiple council members recounted prior enforcement letters and conditional-use requirements tied to the business’s operation. S2 said, "I don't think we need to renew this at this point. I think that we should send the check back and say we understand that you are in violation...we're not going to renew your license and send this back." Council members agreed staff should certify the mailing so the town records that the owner received notice.

Council members discussed the history of conditional-use compliance: they described prior letters, a conditional-use permit in place and neighbors’ complaints about vehicles, signage and on-site storage. Members said the town attorney had been copied on previous correspondence but that the town had not received a clear report back on whether violations were corrected.

The council instructed staff to return the renewal fee and invite the owner to attend a formal town council meeting to present plans for compliance. If the owner chooses not to appear or correct the violations, staff said the town will not issue a new license for the business in town limits.

Next steps: staff will send a certified letter copying the previous enforcement letter, post the matter on the next council agenda and be prepared to present documentation of any outstanding violations.
