Public Lands Council urged to review draft general plan; comments due by the 16th
Summary
County staff circulated a first draft of the general plan with public-lands content; board members were asked to focus on highlighted sections and submit comments for consolidation before Planning & Zoning review.
Speaker 7 told the council the county's first-draft general plan (about 55 pages) has been circulated and asked Public Lands Council members to review highlighted sections and send comments by the 16th. Jan distributed the draft and Speaker 7 said the board's input would be compiled and sent to the consultant (BioWest) for revisions ahead of a public hearing and Planning & Zoning review.
Committee members discussed that the draft contains language affecting wilderness, wilderness study areas, predator control, water management, grazing and recreation, and advised focusing comments on land-use sections to avoid conflicts with the Dingle Act and the county's land-use plan. Commissioner Leonard and other members thanked PLIPCO for providing funding for the update and urged members to prioritize the sections related to public lands.
Speaker 10 reminded members the general plan helps the county and state express priorities to federal land managers during travel-management and resource planning processes; the plan will need Planning & Zoning approval before commission consideration.
