Speaker 2 said the current, empty BLM kiosks and outdated messaging contribute to avoidable rescues and that clearer onsite information could both help visitors and reduce demands on local search-and-rescue teams.
Members discussed cost estimates for three kiosks, noting previous signage work suggested per-sign costs under $2,000 but one member recommended budgeting $1,500 per sign as a practical target. Speaker 10 moved to set aside a $5,000 buffer to design, print and post signage at the three locations; the motion was seconded and carried.
Board members said the county will work with the Bureau of Land Management to determine whether the county will design and pay for signs or share design/printing costs with the BLM. Staff committed to return with quotes and updates if needs change.
Next steps: staff will pursue design quotes, confirm cost-sharing with BLM, and report progress back to the Travel Board prior to installation.
