Fairfax County described Route 50 bike and pedestrian improvements in the Providence District that connected missing links from Blake Lane to Prosperity with trails, shared-use paths, sidewalks, two pedestrian bridges, ADA ramps at bus stops and ties to NOVA Parks and the Cross County Trail.
Fairfax County planners described a Route 50 bike and pedestrian improvements project in the Providence District that filled gaps and added ADA-compliant access between Blake Lane and Prosperity.
A county planner said the project delivered trails, shared-use paths, sidewalks, two pedestrian bridges and ramps at intersections and bus stops, and that the work included attention to slopes and handrails where needed. The project was coordinated with partners including NOVA Parks and was designed to tie into the Cross County Trail.
A resident from History Hills said the new connections improve safety and access for families, older residents, bus riders and children learning to bike. "So now whether it's for families, for young people, for, those retiring, living here ... it really makes a safe connection," the resident said, noting the benefit of avoiding car trips along a busy Route 50.
County officials framed the improvements as increasing safety, access and a more connected community and said the facilities are now open for public use.
