Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission approves minutes; reviews grant updates and schedules follow-up

The Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission convened at 3 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Tom Baker Meeting Room and approved the minutes of its previous meeting by roll-call vote.
The meeting opened with a brief public-comment period; no members of the public asked to speak. After a staff roll-call, commissioners moved directly to agenda items, including updates on two Historic Preservation Fund projects and other business.
Lauren, city staff, updated the commission on a 2024 grant project to produce two local-history education kits about the Great Depression in Bismarck (one for K–5 and one for grades 6–12). The commission also received notice that the city was awarded $34,790 from the 2025 Historic Preservation Fund for a downtown district survey and to finalize the city’s historic preservation plan.
Commissioners spent the bulk of the meeting discussing the draft preservation plan’s implementation table and how the commission should prioritize its objectives and assign follow-up tasks. Several commissioners urged revisiting and re-ranking the plan’s "high priority" items and suggested holding a specially noticed workshop or reserving extended time at the October meeting to work through priorities.
The commission adjourned with its next regular meeting scheduled for Oct. 15 in the Tom Baker Meeting Room.
