Commission debates forming short-term public-safety task force to improve interagency coordination

Chair introduced a proposal on Jan. 20 to form a short-term public-safety task force to examine how Cass County can improve coordination among multiple law-enforcement and public-safety agencies, including the sheriff’s office, the City of Fargo, West Fargo police, highway patrol, and the state's attorney's office. County staff (Mr. Wilson) said the task force is intended as a proactive, time-limited forum to identify easy wins—such as common radio platforms, shared technology, and public input mechanisms—and to evaluate resource efficiencies.
Commissioner Vettel and other commissioners said the group should be focused, brief and convened with the right mix of participants to deliver recommendations. The sheriff (speaking for the sheriff’s office) expressed support, saying the office is "all in" on better communication and collaboration. Commissioners discussed soliciting public input and noted a Feb. 15 deadline in the memo for interested parties to submit topics and ideas; staff said a more detailed plan would be presented for commission action in mid–late February.
What the task force could do: Staff suggested establishing multiagency forums, reviewing duplicated services, identifying technology gaps (dispatch and data-sharing platforms were discussed), and exploring funding or staffing shortfalls. Commissioners flagged implementation and financial constraints and emphasized defining a narrow scope for the task force.
Next steps: Staff will publicize the solicitation of ideas and return with a proposed membership, scope and timeline for commission consideration in February.
