Orange City approves raised-intersection plan and budget amendment for Oak & East Graves pedestrian safety

The council approved a project to improve pedestrian safety at the Oak and East Graves intersection by adopting a budget amendment (Resolution 416-26) and authorizing the project to proceed to construction bidding.
Public works staff presented three options and recommended a raised intersection (option 3). Presenter John Peters said the raised intersection would bring all four crossing legs into ADA compliance without removing the large oak tree, improve drainage and reduce vehicle speeds. Peters told the council the total cost is anticipated to be $276,806.
The council also approved a waiver reducing parallel parking dimensions from 10x22 feet to 9x22 feet (national standard) to allow defined parking and protect trees. The council authorized staff to proceed to the construction-bid phase and adopted the budget amendment.
What’s next: Staff will issue construction bidding documents and return with formal pricing; approvals at this meeting allow the project to move forward into procurement.
