Johnson County Public Works demonstrates updated snow-plowing equipment and route mapping

Phil, a Johnson County Public Works employee, demonstrated the county’s snow-clearing equipment and mapping tools during a short operational run. He said crews are reviewing dump trucks, plow setups and snow maps to prepare for the season, including newly added roads that will be plowed for the first time.

The presentation focused on practical upgrades and training that County crews use to operate more efficiently. "We're going over our snow equipment," Phil said, and described separate joysticks for the wing plow, the snow plow and the dump bed, as well as tailgate and lighting settings. He said these improvements have made the fleet "definitely a lot more efficient, more driver friendly."

Phil pointed to in-vehicle mapping as a key tool for daily decisions on the route. Using the map, crews can locate themselves — Phil referenced "56 Highway" as an example — and choose the next segment to clear. He explained that routes are reassigned each year, so part of the exercise is learning newly added roads: "This road was just added this year, so this will be the first time that it's been plowed this season."

The demonstration emphasized two operational goals: ensuring crews know new or changed routes ahead of winter storms, and optimizing the order of work to make plowing as efficient as possible. Phil said the county continually updates maps and route assignments to reflect changes in the road network and to help crews learn the county layout.
