Staff reviewed the kiosk and cited the zoning ordinance's architectural standards, which require mailbox kiosks to be architecturally compatible with surrounding structures and constructed of materials such as brick, stone or quality siding. Staff noted the kiosk has exposed metal posts and an inverted (butterfly) metal roof and said prior examples of noncompliant kiosks had been removed or required replacement.
Applicant representative Doug Patton described the rooftop as a ‘‘butterfly rooftop’’ used in other developments and said the kiosk had a brick border and matched the development's gated entrance; he asked the commission to allow the structure to remain ‘‘as it is and continue our development.’’ The commission, noting the structure was installed without full design approval and that the site's materials did not meet the ordinance standards, made a motion to deny the design waiver and voted to do so.
Outcome: The design waiver was denied; the applicant may pursue modifications or a future compliant design as allowed under city procedures.
