Aiken library director reports award, previews state-led migration to Koha ILS

At the Oct. 21 meeting Michael Thompson reported that the Aiken Public Library received a state "Quality Library" designation that exempts it from recertification next year and that the window cling for the award is on the door.
Thompson also detailed an upcoming statewide migration from the current Verso integrated library system to Koha, an open-source ILS. He said ByWater Solutions will host and manage the migration and that the state is covering the migration cost; Thompson quoted a ByWater estimate of $30,000 for the migration work.
The director said the library was invited into an earlier phase and is tentatively scheduled to go live on Koha in early April when the Verso contract ends; the migration work will include a data dump and up to six months of coordination for inventory, record cleanup and configuration. Thompson said the move could improve documentation, allow patron categories with different expiration periods and, over time as more libraries join, lower per-library costs.
