Senate committee confirms block of state college trustees after short bios and questions

The Senate Appropriations Committee on Higher Education voted to recommend confirmation of a block of trustees for Florida’s state colleges after hearing brief personal statements from nominees and asking a small number of follow-up questions.
Chair Harrell told nominees the committee would take one block vote unless a senator asked to pull an individual nominee for separate consideration. Trustees and reappointments were presented in person and by Zoom; nominees described community ties, workforce priorities and, in several cases, nursing-program outcomes.
Appointees who spoke included Ronald (Ron) House (Eastern Florida State College), Clarence Steven "Steve" Munns (Lake Sumter State College), Taylor Collins (State College of Florida, Manatee–Sarasota), Mark Goodson (State College of Florida, Manatee–Sarasota), Brett Jones (Lake Sumter State College), Juan Segovia (Miami Dade College), Corey Fosdick (Northwest Florida State College), Nicholas Primrose (St. Johns River State College), and Tanner Peacock (Northwest Florida State College). Many nominees emphasized workforce training, local partnerships with employers and expansion of nursing or allied-health capacity.
Several nominees cited high nursing-program pass rates. Taylor Collins said State College of Florida’s RN pass rates are in the "97 to 98 percent" range. Mark Goodson and Nicholas Primrose reported similar strong passage rates (Goodson cited a 97.4 percent graduation rate and Primrose gave RN 97.6 percent and LPN 100 percent). Brett Jones and others described local workforce partnerships and campus-expansion plans.
There were limited committee questions. Chair Harrell asked Ronald House if he knew his college’s NCLEX passage rate; House said he did not know offhand and would follow up. Chancellor Rodrigues and other witnesses answered budget-related policy questions earlier in the hearing.
After the presentations the committee moved to a roll-call vote on confirming Tabs 1 through 13 as a block. The clerk called the roll and members recorded affirmative votes; Chair Harrell announced the confirmations would be reported favorably to the next stage.
The committee adjourned with no further business.
