Ann Arbor Public Schools’ human resources leaders presented the district’s annual staffing and recruitment report, detailing five‑year trends, recruitment efforts and substitute‑training initiatives.
Assistant Superintendent Shontay Langford said total district FTE is about 1,878.73 and that teacher FTE dropped from previous years to roughly 1,373 due to prior staffing reductions and enrollment declines. Langford said the district expects around 50 net reductions through attrition as staffing is ‘‘right‑sized’’ to current enrollment.
HR highlighted recruitment work: virtual job fairs, weekly new‑hire orientation (146 employees since July 1), partnerships with universities, and a ‘‘grow your own’’ program run with Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw ISD that recently graduated nine candidates in a cohort. HR staff also described an EduStaff pilot that provides training for a small number of paraeducators (five participants) to prepare them for parapro certification and college credits.
Trustees asked for more granular, up‑to‑date vacancy data (e.g., how many openings are in special education, substitutes vs. permanent roles). HR said the staffing numbers are fluid and that, as of an October snapshot, there were 26 teacher openings (later updated to 21), with about 15 of those in special education.
