Board fast-tracks boiler, playground and cafeteria-table purchases amid start-of-school urgency

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education approved a consent agenda Aug. 11 that included three time-sensitive facilities purchases meant to ensure schools are ready for the Aug. 25 first day of classes.
Superintendent Jazz Parks introduced the capital programs presentation and Miss Corona, the district capital programs lead, told the board that the boiler at Allen Elementary is original to the building (installed in 1961) and was found during routine summer maintenance to be beyond repair. "It's done," Corona said, adding that competitive bids have been received, the work is planned for this fall, and the installation carries a 24-month warranty on labor and equipment. She estimated the work will take roughly six to eight weeks and that most disruptive activity will be contained to the boiler room and scheduled in coordination with the principal.
Trustees also approved replacement playground equipment for Abbott Elementary, with one piece of equipment arriving Aug. 29 and an east-side unit scheduled for installation in October; Corona said all new equipment meets ADA requirements and comes with a 15-year warranty. The board approved the purchase of 28 folding cafeteria tables for Scarlet Middle School; usable existing tables will be relocated to other schools to maintain uniformity across sites.
President Feaster urged caution about routinely moving first-briefing items to consent, saying the board should "not bypass our policies unless there's a substantial need" so the community can provide input. Several trustees said the boiler and playground items rose to that level of urgency, citing Michigan weather and the need to order long-lead equipment promptly.
Trustee Schmidt moved to adopt the consent agenda as amended to include AN-2227 (Allen boiler), AN-2234 (Abbott playground equipment) and AN-2238 (Scarlet Middle tables); Trustee Wilks seconded. The motion passed on a roll-call vote.
The board packet also included a request to schedule a closed session Aug. 27 for attorney-client privilege and the superintendent evaluation, and minutes of the July 30 regular and closed meetings, all of which were approved as part of the consent vote.
What happens next: District staff said installation timelines will be coordinated with school principals to minimize classroom disruption, and the boiler purchase will proceed so the unit can be installed before heating season.
