Ann Arbor district outlines net-zero targets and mass-timber pilot for new elementary builds

The Ann Arbor Public Schools capital-programs team on May 21 laid out an environmental-sustainability framework for the first group of new elementary schools that aims to reduce operating and embodied carbon while improving indoor environmental quality.
Presenters said each design team is required to target Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) verified-leader performance, an energy-use-intensity (EUI) target of roughly 17–25 (kBTU/sf/yr), and at least a 10% reduction in embodied carbon. The district plans both aggressive passive-envelope and active measures and renewable energy strategies so that newly designed schools can be net-zero-energy-ready once on-site or off-site renewables are included.
Mr. Bean, the capital-programs presenter, described mass timber as a deliberate strategy to sequester biogenic carbon in buildings and said the district’s energy modeling shows the proposed rebuilt elementary sites would be larger than existing schools yet consume less energy. "Lawton Elementary, as proposed, would be probably one of the greenest elementary schools in the state of Michigan," he said, adding the district applied for a USDA grant to increase mass-timber investment and will know results in July.
Staff emphasized third-party verification (CHPS) and plans to post project sustainability reports and discovery documents on the bond website to make design assumptions and life-cycle assessments available to the public. Trustees pressed staff on how the district measures results and how it will continue to track energy performance after occupancy; staff said operations-and-maintenance metrics and monitoring will verify modeled performance.
No binding policy changes were adopted; trustees asked staff to publish sustainability reports and discovery-disposition materials and to return with additional metrics that show modeled energy reductions versus measured post-occupancy energy use.
