Ann Arbor board approves paraeducator pay deal, non‑bargained raises and routine trade contract annexes
Summary
The board unanimously approved a 1.5% retroactive pay increase for AAAA paraeducators, a matching 1.5% increase for non‑bargained staff (categories 1, 3 and 9), and consent‑agenda trade‑contract items including annexes for Scarlett, New Mitchell, Huron High and Slauson pool demolition. Trustees also endorsed a MASB candidate.
At its Feb. 12 meeting the Ann Arbor Board of Education approved several labor and procurement items as part of board action and the consent agenda.
Labor agreements
Miss Langford presented a tentative collective bargaining agreement for AAAA paraeducators recommending a 1.5% salary increase retroactive to July, step increases for the 2025–26 school year and small longevity step increases. Trustee Wilkerson moved to approve the tentative agreement; Trustee Wilks seconded the motion and the board voted unanimously to adopt the recommendation.
The board also approved a parallel 1.5% salary increase for non‑bargained employees in categories 1, 3 and 9 (about 20–30 employees), agreeing to maintain parity between union and non‑union increases.
Contracts and procurement (consent agenda)
During the consent agenda the board approved annex AN‑2189 (Scarlett Middle School and Community High Schools flooring and painting), AN‑2190 (New Mitchell Elementary trade contracts recommendations part 3), AN‑2191 (Huron High School pool scoreboard) and AN‑2192 (Slauson Middle School pool demolition), and approved minutes from the Jan. 29, 2025 meetings. Trustees approved the consent items by roll call, with all recording "Yes." Staff noted that some trade contracts are early‑phase and that further vetting of contractors will continue.
Trade‑contract briefings
Separately, capital programs staff provided first briefings on recommended trade contracts for Slauson, New Logan and Dickin projects and explained why certain long‑lead items—such as cross‑laminated timber panels and geothermal system components—are being recommended for early procurement. Presenters said mass‑timber systems reduce carbon footprint and may have supply‑chain lead‑time advantages that justify early ordering.
Other business
Trustees also endorsed Guillermo Lopez for the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) board and scheduled a tentative closed session (attorney‑client) for Feb. 26 prior to the regular meeting.
