Dearborn board appoints Lamise Schroer interim superintendent; search for permanent leader to begin

The Dearborn Board of Education voted on Nov. 10 to appoint Lamise Schroer as interim superintendent effective Dec. 5 while the board conducts a search for a permanent replacement.

The motion was moved from the dais and supported by a trustee; during the public discussion Schroer said she would not be an applicant for the permanent role. "If this were to be moved and approved, it would be my honor to serve in this role," Schroer said, outlining what she described as immediate priorities: student achievement, addressing chronic absenteeism, bullying prevention and attention to infrastructure needs across district buildings.

Trustees discussed next steps for a permanent search, including hiring a search firm, conducting focus groups, building a candidate profile and making up to six candidates available for board review. The board’s timeline calls for the search firm RFP review and bid process in November and December, with a decision about the firm expected at the board meeting in December and candidate interviews to follow.

A roll‑call vote recorded 'yes' votes from trustees Jamal Ajami, Ali Bazzi, Patrick D'Ambrosio, Mary Petrikov, Nazareh Zav and the board president; one trustee was absent. The chair instructed that the vice president and treasurer would meet with Schroer to negotiate the short‑term contract.

Trustees also thanked outgoing Superintendent Glenn Malayko for nearly three decades of service and noted related transitional planning and stakeholder involvement for the superintendent search.

The board did not take further personnel votes at the meeting; the search process and timelines were described as forthcoming.
