Board raises grease trap and mixed septage tipping fees, effective May 1, 2026

The Muskegon County Board of Public Works voted in favor of raising tipping fees at the Resource Recovery Center for grease trap waste and mixed septage.
The board approved raising the grease trap waste fee from 7.3¢ per gallon to 12.7¢ per gallon and increasing the mixed septage and grease rate from 6.8¢ per gallon to 12.7¢ per gallon, with the rates effective May 1, 2026.
Dave Johnson explained staff hope to move toward grease recycling but need higher fees to cover current operational costs of removing, hauling and disposal. He said staff surveyed customers to assess likely responses and reported that state rules allow grease to be mixed into septic waste provided it does not exceed 25 percent of the mix. Commissioners pressed staff on whether haulers have alternative disposal locations; staff said they were not aware of other nearby facilities and that the county may be the only known operator taking that waste.
The board took a roll-call vote at the meeting; the named commissioners present responded in the affirmative and the motion carried.
