Muskegon County accepts DNR grants, approves vehicle purchase and disposals

County staff told the board the county received an FY 2026 off-road vehicle law enforcement grant of $14,004, above the $12,000 amount it had budgeted, and asked the board to amend records to accept the difference. "We are budgeted for 12, and the DNR actually received $14,000," a county staff member stated during the meeting. The board approved an amendment to record and accept the additional funds and authorized the sheriff to sign the agreement.
Staff also presented a separate $2,000 DNR award for enforcement activities at trailheads and similar locations and asked the board to authorize the sheriff to sign that agreement; the board approved the acceptance and signature authorization.
The board authorized purchase of one new 2026 Ford from Great Lakes Ford for the sheriff's office, including requested fittings and equipment. County staff described a package of requested equipment and fittings necessary to outfit the vehicle for patrol duties.
Commissioners also approved disposal and reconfiguration plans for older vehicles, including removing salvageable chassis and scrapping a 2007 Ford chassis, reconfiguring dive-team boxes and compressors, and repurposing a donated chassis and an admin SUV budgeted for subpoena service. Staff said some reconfiguration work will refill dive-team air tanks and compressors and that the marine truck referenced had been budgeted for 2025.
The actions were presented as budget-neutral adjustments tied to grant receipts and planned fleet maintenance; no additional county general-fund increases were described for the vehicle procurement or disposals at the meeting.
The items passed by voice votes or general consent as recorded on the meeting minutes. The board moved on to subsequent agenda items after the approvals.
