Sheriff candidate announces run; local hospice group seeks donations

Two public comments at the start of the Clare County meeting highlighted local civic engagement: a sheriff candidacy announcement and a pitch for a local hospice/comfort house fundraiser.

Steven Sense, who identified himself as a Grant Township resident and a former Clare County Sheriff's Office employee, announced his candidacy for Clare County sheriff. Sense outlined his background, including military service, work as a military policeman and experience at the Clare County Sheriff's Office where he served for 11 years in patrol and later as a school resource officer. "I wanna make the move forward to, make a run at the next position of sheriff," he said, and thanked county law enforcement staff and the board for their work.

Tom Currensill urged support for Big R Smokin' Joe Comfort House, describing the nonprofit's work raising money since 2005 and plans to renovate a purchased church on Granbury Road into a five-room comfort house. He provided details about upcoming fundraisers (including events on Feb. 7, March 7 and April 11 and a larger event Apr. 25) and said the group was seeking grants and donations to finish remodeling and cover operating expenses. "They need comfort, in within that time," Currensill said of hospice patients, and asked community members to contact him after the meeting for questions or to get involved.

Both commentators spoke during the board’s public comment period; no formal action was taken in response to either announcement. Board members thanked the speakers and noted where appropriate that fundraising support could be provided by individuals rather than through board action.

The board adjourned at the conclusion of its business.
