Jefferson County to close Palm Boulevard Bridge for low‑water crossing project

The Jefferson County Board voted Monday to close Palm Boulevard Bridge to construct a low‑water crossing, a project county engineers and supervisors described as a lower‑cost long‑term solution than rebuilding the aging bridge.
Road Department staff explained the bridge is functionally restricted (currently posted for 3‑ton loads) and that rebuilding the structure would require an estimated $400,000. The department recommended decommissioning the bridge and installing a concrete low‑water crossing with pipe(s) beneath to move normal flow and a concrete deck across the top. Speaker 8 said the low‑water crossing mirrors similar projects used elsewhere in the county and will better withstand maintenance pressures and costs over time.
Supervisors and nearby landowners discussed drainage, approach‑bank heights and impacts to access during construction. Board members asked staff to ensure all staging and re‑opening plans minimize disruption; staff indicated they aim to complete removal and replacement this summer, subject to sequencing and contractor availability.
A motion to close the bridge for the work was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The board indicated it will schedule the closure and notify affected property owners prior to starting construction.
