An Aflac representative (Speaker 13) presented voluntary cancer and related indemnity insurance options to the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors and staff, describing how the plans operate and how enrollment would be handled.
The representative explained these products pay cash benefits directly to the employee rather than to health-care providers. "On a typical cancer claim, just even on average, this cancer product's going to put about $20,000 in someone's hands," the Aflac representative said, adding that some claims have been paid near $100,000.
Aflac's presenter described a limited-time "guarantee issue" option the company was offering for the remainder of the year that would waive health questions for employers with at least 35 employees; benefits under that option would begin after specific waiting periods for individuals with prior cancer histories. The presenter emphasized employer logistics: payroll deduction, department-head coordination, employee education sessions (Zoom or in-person), and post-enrollment support by Aflac representatives.
County payroll and auditor staff (Speaker 1 and Speaker 4) said they would coordinate regarding enrollment logistics and department schedules; supervisors agreed the auditor's office should be the contact point for scheduling outreach to departments. No procurement or formal board action was taken; staff were asked to assess employee interest and report back.
Next steps: Aflac will coordinate with the auditor's office to set dates for informational sessions and provide plan details and costs to employees.
