Jefferson County authorizes signature to participate in Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement

The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors voted to authorize the county uthority to sign participation documents related to the Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement, a step the county must take to remain eligible to receive any disbursements from the state allocation.
"If we don't sign it, we're not going to get anything," the county signer told the board, while also noting that the state determines allocation among political subdivisions and the exact county share was not yet known. The signer said the county could place any funds received into an interest-bearing account while leaders research the state-level allocation plan and weigh options for larger projects versus targeted programmatic spending.
Supervisors discussed whether signing commits the county to a specific spending plan (it does not) and emphasized the desirability of researching expected allocations before earmarking funds. The board moved and approved authorization for the county signatory to execute the participation form so Jefferson County remains eligible to receive whatever funds are allocated to the county under the settlement.
What's next: Staff will research the state allocation agreement, report back on estimated county shares and propose options for fund use in consultation with opioid-response stakeholders.
