Committee backs Strengthening Families cohort, annual training and provider outreach

Committee participants described plans to launch prevention and training efforts alongside housing and treatment outreach.

One member who attended recent Strengthening Families training at Iowa State summarized the curriculum and cited research that, in their account, links participation to reduced underage drinking and lower drug use among participating families. The committee said the program is aimed primarily at families with children roughly 10–14 years old and that a first seven-week cohort was expected to begin in October.

Members also discussed the benefit of bringing Tall Cop training to local professionals annually to keep materials current and recommended pairing Tall Cop, Strengthening Families and other trainings with community outreach events. They suggested inviting new or regional treatment providers (members mentioned White Oak Recovery and Ivory Plains Recovery, and noted a new Oskaloosa facility) to present program models and explore partnerships and satellite-site possibilities.

Committee participants highlighted challenges finding treatment capacity in the region and recounted referring people to centers in Fort Dodge, Webster City, Sioux City and as far as Florida and California. They emphasized that local combinations of housing, transport and workforce supports were necessary for recovery programs to succeed.
