Supervisors set second hearing on rumble-strip ordinance after DOT guidance prompts change

Staff explained the existing county language requires rumble panels prior to stop signs for new overlays regardless of speed limit or context, while IDOT recommends them primarily on roads with higher speed limits and outside towns.
Members of the public did not raise comment during the hearing. Several supervisors said they were comfortable proceeding but recommended a second public reading to ensure notice and avoid perceptions of rushing the change. One supervisor said the board could be more stringent than DOT if it chose, but that community input was important.
The board voted to hold a second public hearing on September 2 at 9:00 a.m. rather than waive additional readings. No ordinance vote occurred at this meeting.
The second hearing will give residents another opportunity to weigh in on whether rumble-strip panels should remain required on local overlay projects regardless of speed limit and context, or whether the ordinance should be limited to higher-speed segments as DOT suggests.
