The Richmond City Board of Public Works and Safety on Jan. 22 approved paramedic preemployment agreements for five candidates named on the Richmond Fire Department’s 2026 hiring list.
Nick Arbogast, identified as chief of BMS at the Richmond Fire Department, presented the list and asked the board to approve preemployment contracts for Hayden Tomlinson (contract 12‑2026), Jack Patton (13‑2026), Calvin King (14‑2026), Tyler Adams (15‑2026) and Tyrone Washington (16‑2026). Arbogast said the agreement requires probationary firefighters to obtain paramedic certification within five years; the city will cover the education costs required to achieve that certification. “Basically, stating that the probationary firefighter acknowledges that they'll obtain a paramedic certification within 5 years of the date of hire,” Arbogast said.
Board member 2 moved to approve each contract individually; Board member 3 seconded each motion. Each contract was approved by unanimous voice vote. The board also confirmed that if an employee fails to obtain the certification and voluntarily leaves the city, the employee agrees to reimburse the city according to the contract’s reimbursement schedule.
The personnel approvals were presented as a set but handled as individual contract votes during the meeting.
