Richmond board approves memorial block party and Meltdown Festival fireworks and street closures

The Richmond City Board of Public Works and Safety on Jan. 22 approved two community events: a memorial block party in July and the 13th annual Meltdown Festival’s fireworks and street-closure plan.
Aaron Stevens, administrative resource officer for the Richmond Police Department, requested a full traffic shutdown of the 600 block of South 10th Street on July 25 from 4–8 p.m. for a community celebration in memory of Miss Nikki McCowen, who has been missing since 2001. “So I come asking you to accept the proposal,” Stevens said. Board member 2 moved to approve the closure; Board member 3 seconded and the motion carried.
Christy Cruz, community recreation coordinator for Richmond Parks and Recreation, requested permission to set off fireworks on Saturday, Jan. 31 between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the Richmond Sanitary District, 25 North 7th Street. She said fireworks would be viewable from Elstro Plaza and asked for street closures and parking changes from Jan. 26 at 6 a.m. through Feb. 2 at noon to allow semis and ice carvers to stage and to reserve space for food trucks. The board voted to approve the fireworks and the associated street and parking closures.
Both items were presented as scheduled requests with support from staff; no members of the public spoke against the requests during the meeting.
